Special Cylinder Cut To Reduce Consumption

Scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute have developed a manufacturing process that reduces friction between the piston and cylinder and thereby consumes two to three percent less fuel. The demand for oil is expected to decrease as well.

The new production is both the static and also compensate for the thermal distortion of the cylinder. Using a special tool, which can adapt its shape, the cylinder is honed. So much so that small elevations can occur at the Laufläche. If the engine is at operating temperature, the surface is exactly round, so that the piston can move without much friction up and down.

A prototype of the special tool is used, according to the Institute at an unnamed manufacturer already. Thus, the method should be tested for the rapid production cycles back.
